Spinal Decompression Therapy

The first and original leader in VAX-D Spinal Decompression treatment in Naples, FL (since 2005). At Hiler Chiropractic and Neurology we have the experience of performing over 25,000 VAX-D Spinal Decompression treatments! VAX-D Spinal Decompression is an effective spinal rehabilitation program for conditions of the spine. The program consists of an FDA cleared non-surgical spinal decompression therapy focused on decompressing the discs. Pain relief is thought to result from lowering the pressure on the discs, allowing areas of bulging and herniated disc material to be drawn back into place.

As the ligaments that hold disc material in place become stretched or torn due to bulging and herniation, spinal decompression is believed to assist the ligament bands that hold the disc material in place to heal, preventing future recurrence.

Spinal Decompression Therapy

  • Degenerated Discs
  • Bulged Disks
  • Sciatica
  • Back Pain
  • Neck Pain

Over time as we age and as we sustain injuries, pressure can build up inside the vertebral disc, causing the disc to bulge. With increasing or prolonged pressure, a disc can rupture or herniate.

The bulging disc material puts pressure on the nerves and other structures and can cause pain or other nerve symptoms. This pain can travel into the buttocks, all the way up to your neck, and down the legs/arms or into the toes/fingers. Pressure on nerves can lead to back pain, numbness, or problems with movement.

Spinal Decompression FAQs

What are my chances for success?

Non-Surgical VAX-D Spinal Decompression has had great success with patients suffering from herniated intervertebral discs (ranging from 80 to 90%). It’s even greater for other conditions. At Hiler Chiropractic & Neurology we have an excellent success rate because we only accept patients who we truly believe we can help.

What kind of conditions does Spinal Decompression treat?

Disc problems of multiple varieties as bulging discs, degenerated discs, herniated discs or ruptured and protruding discs of the cervical (neck) and lumbar (low back) spine, as well as joint arthrosis, facet syndrome, sciatica, mild spondylolisthesis and stenosis. We have two VAX-D Spinal Decompression units to meet the growing needs of the community.

Patient Evaluation

The doctor will conduct a thorough initial history, perform a physical evaluation, review all data and combine it with any complexities involved. They use the information to make decisions to be certain the patient qualifies for the spinal decompression procedure.

What is the difference between VAX-D Spinal Decompression & Traction?

VAX-D Spinal Decompression is a much more sophisticated technology which overcomes the body’s resistance to traction. In terms of herniated/bulging discs, nowadays, traditional traction is actually contraindicated.

To put it simply, traction is where they attach harnesses to you and literally try to “pull you apart.” However, in your problem areas, you have hypermobility in the ligamentous tissues and guarding from muscle splinting. With traction, it can tear the white & yellow annular ligaments even more, making them even further hypermobile or “loose”, and the body may react with additional protective muscle splinting and spasm.

Our state-of-the-art, computerized VAX-D Non-Surgical Spinal Decompression unit isolates the areas and intermittently (on & off) “milks” the fluid back into the disc. The key, is that it doesn’t overload the body’s Golgi Tendon Apparatus, which is the body’s protective mechanism when it’s pulled upon. Our unit has a closed-loop feedback system which constantly senses the body many times per second, adjusts tensions accordingly in order to relax and confuse paraspinal muscles and allow distractive forces to decompress the intervertebral disc space. It’s these sophisticated mechanisms which make it possible to apply the distractive force in a non-linear or logarithmic fashion. (Unlike simple traction). This is the key to achieving true spinal disc decompression, and creating a negative pressure within the spinal disc.

What is the cost for Spinal Decompression Therapy?

Good news! The cost is reasonable and we provide Naples, FL residents the opportunity to receive spinal decompression therapy. We are typically significantly lower than other clinics who will actually provide less at a higher cost. After examination you will receive a detailed recommendation and quote for a customized regimen. We’ve eliminated the worry of finances by offering generous discounts, no-interest and flexible payment plans and we also offer financing at low rates. During your consultation, the doctor will determine if you are a candidate and fully explain to you how much it will cost before starting care.

Med-X “Boot Camp” Back Strengthening Program

We offer a follow-up physical therapy program designed to stabilize and strengthen the core muscles of the spine to relieve and prevent back pain recurrence after you have completed a course of non-surgical spinal decompression therapy.

Studies reveal that the muscles of the back called the “multifidi” atrophy in 80% of patients with back pain.
Our Med-X Back Pain Relief Program is intended for patients to strengthen and maintain the spinal muscles after decompression therapy for the disc(s) is completed in order to promote long-term stabilization of the discs.

What Makes It Unique?

The Med-X Program is different from conventional physical therapy. It is not intended to stretch or limber up muscles, rather it is an intensive program which targets specific back muscles weakened from disuse and puts them through an isolated workout. We consider it a “boot camp” approach to strengthen muscles of the back and the approach makes a real difference.
Research has shown that people with back pain have a tendency to “favor” the weakened muscles and recruit other surrounding muscles to compensate. The favored, pampered or unused muscles begin to atrophy within two (2) days. This makes them more vulnerable to further weakness and injury, exacerbates back pain and triggers a self-perpetuating chronic cycle of muscle deconditioning.

After the disc undergoes spinal decompression therapy, the involved, weakened back muscles must be identified, isolated and then exercised to build up the muscles of the spinal column. This is critical to aid in healing and maintaining a healthy spine.
A regular exercise routine will not isolate the back muscles sufficiently. Regular exercise allows other non-weakened muscles to be recruited to do the work of the weaker muscles of the spine, overlooking the disused muscles.

For maximum results, you must use specifically designed core and back exercise equipment that allows specific spinal muscles to work by blocking out other recruiting muscles in order to target and isolate the weakened muscles of the spine.

Our comprehensive program helps ensure the permanency of your decompression results. After completing a course of spinal decompression therapy at Hiler Chiropractic & Neurology in Naples, FL, it’s now time to ensure that you maintain the maximum, long-term benefits from your treatment and reduce the risk of recurrence. Once your tissues reach the final remodeling stage of healing, which helps form the final matrix of the newly regenerated tissues, you’ll want to ensure that the benefits will continue.

Quite simply, to ensure that you live the rest of your life free from back pain and avoid recurrence. In the medical profession, it’s termed maintenance. We’ve put our own twist on it and call it our Spine Longevity Program.

The way to minimize the risk of having a recurrence of your back pain is to maintain the strength of the spinal column musculature. This is accomplished by maintaining spinal muscle strength through a scheduled care plan of maintenance, specifically our Spine Longevity Program.

We encourage our patients to play an active role in living their lives pain-free and extending the longevity of their spine by enrolling in our routine exercise program for the extensor muscles of the spine. Without maintenance, most patients spinal muscles will weaken, become vulnerable to further weakness, re-injury and muscle deconditioning.

We employ specialized machines, not found in gyms, that specifically target vital, but hard-to-activate muscle groups. You also have to stabilize the pelvis through the use of a special machine as well. Exercise machines found at the gym may not target these vital muscle groups since larger, stronger muscles tend to be activated by these more common machines. These specialized exercises have been found to increase bone mineral density in those over age 50, helping to ameliorate osteoporosis.

Our primary focus is to literally get our patients’ backs back. We’re confident our Spine Longevity program is perfect for maintaining the strength of your spine muscles with ease and in the comfort of a physician supervised environment. We promise to be the best physicians we can to make your maintenance scheduled visits as much of a fun experience as we can. It’s maximum results in the most convenient setting and we’re sure you’ll enjoy the experience and the rest of your life.
